Garcia, Federico (BMI)
Federico Garcia was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1978. His musical training began in 1986, and in 2001 he earned a B.A. in Composition from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, where he studied piano with Radostina Petkova, and composition with Gustavo Parra and Harold Vásquez among others.In the same year he won the first prize in the National Composition Competition for orchestra, with his Passacaglia on a theme by Bach, and moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Studying principally with Eric Moe and Mathew Rosenblum, he graduated in 2006 with a PhD in Composition and Theory.
Federico has most recently participated in the Cabrillo Festival of Modern Music (Santa Cruz, California, 2009) and Music10 (Blonay, Switzerland), and was featured as Composer in Residence at the 2010 Dallas Festival of Modern Music. His music has been performed in Colombia, Argentina, the United States, Germany, and as far away as Thailand.
Currently, Federico is Artistic Director and principal conductor of the contemporary music ensemble ALIA MUSICA Pittsburgh, and Music Director of the East Liberty Community Engagement Orchestra at the Hope Academy of Music and the Arts in Pittsburgh.
