Angel of Peace was inspired by an artistic work, an eight by twelve foot angel painting on silk, created by Carla Brooke and Liz Powell. The painting was commissioned by the Portola Valley (Calif.) Presbyterian Church and was a healing response to the tragedy of September 11. Carla Brooke wrote a poem about her creative process which was to become the text for this choral work, Angel of Peace, by John Beeman.
In the musical piece, the composer attempts to portray the subtle blending of the transparent colors on silk of the artwork, as well as, the lyrical text of the poem.
Angel of Peace was premiered by the Oregon Reportory Singers, (Gil Seeley, director), at the Oregon Bach Festival on July 6, 2002.
