Silence Orchids was first performed in Akron, Ohio on 30 October 1988 by Marcia Eckert in Guzzetta Recital Hall at the University of Akron. She gave the New York City premiere at St. Michael's Church on 17 November 1988. Christopher Vassiliades played the work in New York later the same season on an Oval Window concert. Along with Bennett Lerner, these pianists have been steadfast friends and devoted performers of mine and others' music, and Silence Orchids is perhaps as much a group portrait of their actions as it is an evidence of my writing. -Roger Zahab
