Canon starts by assembling several motives into a recognizable theme. The imitation of the theme by the piano starts a canon that remains strict for the majority of the piece, but perceptible only at the beginning. The development of the theme soon consumes itself, leaving the instruments to fade into an adagio where the atmosphere is set by harmonics, sul ponticello, clusters, and plucked strings. The risoluto coda then resumes the motives of the beginning.
Canon for violin & piano was written in 2002 for Roger Zahab, who premiered it with the composer on November 12 in the 'Music on the Edge' series at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2009 the piece was revised by the composer.
