Stephenson, Alex ( )

Alex Stephenson (b. 1990) is a native of Philadelphia and has studied music at the University of Chicago and King's College London.

Alex has been featured by such venues and organizations as the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Hindemith Music Centre, WRSU-FM, and the Illinois State Music Teachers’ Association. His works have been programmed by many distinguished artists, including cellist Nicholas Photinos, the Belsky/Maxwell Piano Duo, conductor Barbara Schubert, cellist Ovidiu Marinescu with pianist Joseph Ferretti, and soprano Barbara Nyce. He is the recipient of awards from ASCAP and the New York Art Ensemble, among many others.

He has studied composition with Yao Chen and April Mok in Chicago, with Rob Keeley and Nicola Moro in London, and with Joseph Nocella in Philadelphia. He has also studied with Marta Ptasyznska and Füsun Köksal in contemporary music and with Svetlana Belsky, Amy Briggs, and Mara Parker in performance. At the Music09 Festival, he worked with composers Chen Yi, Joel Hoffman, and Frederic Rzewski, as well as with the ensemble eighth blackbird.

Recent highlights include the world premiere of his "Three Movements for Flute, Cello, and Piano" at the Music09 Festival and the premieres of "Dorian Gray Listened" and "Dorian Fragments" with the University of Chicago New Music Ensemble. "Al Fine" received its first performances in Chicago in November 2010.
