Completed in June of 2004, Ludus tubarum is the first of three — thus far — short multi-movement works of unusual combinations of two instruments. The Latin word "ludus," that is, "play" or "game," refers to both the playfulness that I hoped to convey through the music and the sense of the composition as a kind of game played by two athletes, in this case by two players of musical instruments. If at times the contest seems in earnest, it is no more than that played by two puppies pretending to bite one another yet never drawing blood! At other times, as in the second movement, they seem just content to share the same pillow with one another."
