Although I believe that it is true of all my music, I think that it is especially true of Three Episodes, and that is that it is music of character — or perhaps I should say music of "characterization." While I have my own views of what these characters are, I prefer that they be determined by the players and, ultimately, by the listeners themselves. Is the character of the first episode, for example, one of anger or simply energy? Is the last episode assertive or merely playful, or may it be both? In the course of the piece what does the character become, and is the attentive listener aware of the "becoming?" Finally, do these "characterizations" reflect our own emotional lives?
Three Episodes is above all an ensemble piece written for four musicians who have not only mastered their instruments but have also learned how to work in communicado with one another — as the best quartets of string instruments and jazz ensembles have always done.
