Esta peça foi uma prenda de anos e está organizada a partir da sequência abstrata dos números que a intitulam. 23 eram os anos da destinatária e 8 os bissextos do autor. 9 e 7 são os números onomásticos do autor e 8 e 4 os da pessoa a quem foi dedicada a obra. Sobrepondo ambos números dá os compassos 9/8 e 7/4 que somam 23/8. Esse compasso complexo de 23/8 repete-se 23 vezes. O projeto original abrangia 8 andamentos, como indica a última cifra do título, mas o silêncio da pessoa homenageada ao receber este primeiro andamento como prenda, desencorajou a composição dos sete restantes.

O complexo geratriz {9,7,8,4} também organiza os intervalos melódicos e harmónicos.

This piece was a birthday present and is organized from the abstract sequence of the numbers that entitled it. 23 were the years of the destinatary and 8 the bissexts of the author. 9 and 7 are the onomastic numbers of the author, and 8 and 4 those of the person to whom the work was dedicated. Superimposing both numbers gives the time signatures 9/8 and 7/4 that sum up 23/8.This composite meter of 23/8 is repeated 23 times. The original project covered 8 movements, as the last cipher of the title indicates, but the silence of the person honoured on receiving this first movement as a gift, discouraged the composition of the remaining seven.

The generating complex {9,7,8,4} also organises the melodic and harmonic intervals.
